Getting started

Installation, theme trials, templates and publishing.

Install Lumenfold from the Shopify Theme Store

Add Lumenfold directly from the Shopify Theme Store to try it with your own products and brand settings.

  1. Open the Lumenfold listing in the Shopify Theme Store and select Try theme. Sign in to the store where you want to use it.
  2. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes. Find Lumenfold under Draft themes and select Edit theme.
  3. Add your logo, select colours and fonts, and connect products and collections. Your changes are saved in the trial.
  4. Use Preview from the theme’s actions menu to check the storefront.
  5. When you are ready, choose Buy on the Lumenfold theme card. Purchase is required before publishing.
Already purchased? Open Lumenfold from Online Store → Themes and continue with your setup.

Why your new installation differs from the demo

Lumenfold includes the layout, typography, colour settings and sections. The demo’s product catalogue, furniture photography, collections, navigation menus and store pages belong to the demo store and are not included as store content.

  1. Create your own products and collections in Shopify.
  2. Replace image placeholders and onboarding text in each section.
  3. Select the products, collections, menus and pages requested by the section settings.
  4. Check that every visible button has a destination. Remove any section you do not need.

A practical launch checklist
  1. Add a logo and favicon; check both on a phone.
  2. Set colours and typography, then build your home page with your own photography.
  3. Create your navigation menus and connect them in Header and Footer.
  4. Check a product with variants, a sold-out product, a collection and the search results.
  5. Test quantity changes, quick add, the cart and checkout using Shopify’s appropriate test setup.
  6. Add your actual delivery, returns, privacy and contact information.
  7. Check mobile layouts, keyboard navigation, image crops and every important link.
  8. Confirm payment, shipping and domain settings in Shopify before publishing.

Templates: create different layouts without changing every page

A template is a shared layout. Changes to the default product template affect every product assigned to that template; changing one product’s data does not change the other products.

  1. In the editor’s page selector, choose the page type, then create a template based on an existing template.
  2. Add, remove or reorder sections and blocks for that layout.
  3. Save the template. In the relevant product, collection or page in Shopify admin, select it under Theme template.
  4. Preview an item actually assigned to that template.
Shopify’s assignment list uses templates from the published theme. A template created only in an unpublished copy may not appear in that list yet.

Brand & layout

Logos, typography, colours, spacing and motion.

Logo, favicon and header sizing
  1. Open Theme settings → Brand to choose the logo, logo width and favicon.
  2. Open the Header section for a header-specific logo override, mobile logo width, logo visual scale and artwork position.
  3. If using a transparent home-page header, add a suitable transparent-header logo and text colour.
  4. Check the logo against both the hero and the header background after scrolling.

If a logo appears tiny despite a large width setting, check whether the image file contains excessive empty space around the artwork.

Link to this article

Fonts, colour schemes and spacing
  1. Use Theme settings → Typography for body and display fonts, text scale, heading scale and letter spacing.
  2. Use Colors to configure schemes. Choose a scheme separately in each section.
  3. Use Layout for maximum page width, page margin, section spacing and the editorial background grid.
  4. Use Components for button, input and media corner radii, product image ratio and card text alignment.
Check text contrast after changing colours. Large headings should wrap at sensible words; use a shorter title or a smaller heading size if needed.

Motion, hover images and accessibility

In Theme settings → Motion, choose the motion level, whether sections reveal on scroll and whether a second product image appears on hover. The second-image effect needs at least two product images.

Keep controls understandable without hover. Add useful image descriptions in Shopify, use descriptive link labels, and test menus, variant choices, accordions and the cart with a keyboard. Check the mobile preview as well as the desktop view.

Header & navigation

Menus, featured images, the announcement bar and footer.

Create a dropdown or mega menu
  1. Create or edit a menu in Shopify’s Content → Menus area. Add a parent link and nest child links beneath it; nest a third level when you need grouped categories.
  2. In the theme editor, open Header → Main menu and select that menu.
  3. Use clear, short parent labels. Set each parent link to a useful collection or landing page.
  4. Preview the desktop dropdown and the mobile navigation, including keyboard focus and close behaviour.

Lumenfold automatically uses collection image cards when a dropdown has no more than three child links, each child links to a collection with a featured image, and none of those children has its own submenu. Other arrangements use grouped text links.

Link to this article

Add a featured image to a mega menu
  1. In Header, add a Mega menu feature block.
  2. Set its menu item field to the exact text of the top-level menu label, including capitalization.
  3. Choose an image and fill in the block’s text and destination.
  4. Preview that menu. If the feature is absent, check the exact label match and make sure an image is selected.

Sticky header, announcements and footer links

The Header section controls sticky behaviour, compact-on-scroll mode, shadow, search, account and localization controls. Country and language selectors need corresponding options configured in Shopify before they can appear.

Add messages as Announcement blocks in the Announcement bar. In Footer, add menu, text, newsletter, social, contact or image blocks. Choose the menu in each Footer menu block.

Policy links depend on your store’s policies. Social links are configured under Theme settings → Social media.

Home page & storytelling

Home page sections, image crops, video and shoppable content.

Build an editorial home page

A useful starting sequence is Aperture hero → Collection cards → Featured collection → Image with story → Shop the scene → FAQ → Newsletter. Adapt it to your catalogue instead of using every section.

  1. Open the home page in the editor and choose Add section.
  2. Set a clear heading, select real content and give the main button a destination.
  3. Drag sections to change their order. Use blocks to add individual cards, points or rows inside a section.
  4. Preview the whole page to check pacing, repeated messages and loading speed.

Link to this article

Hero images, mobile crops and slideshows

Aperture hero, Image banner and Slideshow support separate desktop and mobile imagery. Choose compositions that leave space for your text and keep the subject visible at both widths.

Aperture hero also includes maximum heading size, text width, image label and small note settings. Image banner offers overlay and mobile content positioning. Slideshow adds a Slide block for each slide, rotation timing and controls.

Prioritize loading for the first visible hero image. Avoid enabling image priority on multiple sections farther down the page.

Shop the scene: place product hotspots
  1. Add Shop the scene and choose a lifestyle image.
  2. Add a Product point block for each featured item and select the product.
  3. Adjust the point’s horizontal and vertical positions until it sits on the item in the image.
  4. Test every hotspot on desktop and mobile, and check that the correct product opens.

Shop the set: let customers choose pieces together
  1. Add Shop the set. Add a Product block for each piece and select its product.
  2. Choose which blocks are selected by default, then set the image ratio, columns and button label.
  3. Preview the selection total and add-to-cart behaviour with in-stock products.
This section adds the selected products to the cart; it does not create an automatic bundle discount. Products with variants use the selected or first available variant shown by the section. Required selling-plan products cannot be added directly through this set selector.

Video, before-and-after and rich media

Background video provides a muted visual background with fallback imagery. Video story presents a video with supporting copy. Shoppable video pairs a video with selectable products. Video gallery groups multiple clips.

Use Shopify-hosted video in the video picker and add a fallback image where available. Autoplay is controlled by the visitor’s browser and device; it is not guaranteed.

For Image comparison, select before and after images with matching framing, add clear labels and choose the starting divider position. Use authentic examples of your products.

Products & collections

Product templates, variants, cards, filters and collections.

Product page blocks, variants and quantity

Open a product template and select its Product section. Choose the desktop media width, media layout, image zoom and video looping. Available gallery layouts include Editorial grid, Stacked, Carousel and Carousel with thumbnails.

Arrange blocks such as Heading, Price, Inventory status, Variant picker, Quantity, Buy buttons, Description, Accordion and Pickup availability. Product titles, prices, stock and media come from the product in Shopify admin.

Use Variant picker → Color option style to choose Swatches or Buttons. Native Shopify swatch data supplies colours or images; colour names alone may appear as a neutral fallback. Quantity respects the selected variant’s minimum, maximum and increment rules.

Link to this article

Accordions and personalization fields

Add an Accordion block for material, sizing or delivery information. Enter content directly or select a page. Shared template content appears on all products using that template, so create a separate template when a group needs different information.

A Personalization field block adds customer-entered text to the product. Configure its label, placeholder, help text, maximum characters and whether it is required. Test the resulting cart item before launch.

A text personalization field does not itself add a surcharge, generate artwork or provide a file-upload service.

Product cards: quick add, quick view and badges

Use Theme settings → Components for quick-add style, product quick view, ratings and sale/custom badge visibility. Individual product-list sections also have switches for vendor, swatches and quick add.

Sale prices use the product’s price and compare-at price. Ratings require compatible product review data; the theme does not create customer reviews. The small number in the image corner is a decorative product reference, not stock or a review score.

Products that require choices may lead customers to options instead of being added immediately. Check a simple product and a product with variants.

Collection banners, category links and buying guides
  1. Add collection images and descriptions in Shopify admin.
  2. In the collection template, open Collection. Configure image and description visibility, products per page, columns, sorting and filtering.
  3. Select a Category navigation menu to display links to related categories.
  4. Set the product-grid button, guide button, guide link and short collection note.
  5. For a guide on the same page, add a Multicolumn section with Section anchor set to a unique value such as collection-guide. Set the guide link to #collection-guide.

Add an Image with story, FAQ or related collections below the grid to help shoppers make a decision.

Set up collection filters and product recommendations

Enable filtering in the Collection or Search section. Configure the available filters through Shopify’s Search & Discovery app; the theme displays the filters Shopify supplies. Products need the corresponding data for useful results.

The Product recommendations section supports related or complementary recommendations. Configure recommendations in Search & Discovery where needed. The section depends on Shopify returning suitable products.

If filters or recommendations are missing, first check the section switches, catalogue data and Shopify’s app configuration.

Cart, search & email

Cart settings, storefront search and newsletter signups.

Cart drawer, shipping message and checkout controls

Open Theme settings → Cart to choose the cart type, notes, vendor display, shipping estimator, terms requirement, terms page and reassurance text.

The Free shipping threshold controls the theme’s progress message. It does not create a free shipping rate. Configure actual rates and eligibility in Shopify’s shipping settings and check the message against your markets and currency.

Dynamic checkout is controlled in the Product section’s Buy buttons block. Payment methods and checkout availability are managed by Shopify and depend on your store configuration.

Link to this article

Search, breadcrumbs and recently viewed products

Enable search in Header and choose its desktop trigger style. The Search template controls filtering, sorting, results per page and product-card details.

Breadcrumbs and the back-to-top button are in Theme settings → Navigation and utilities. Add a Recently viewed section where it is useful; it will populate as the visitor browses products, subject to their browser storage settings.

When testing a new store, make sure products are active and available to the Online Store channel before investigating theme search.

Link to this article

Newsletter sections and the newsletter popup

Use the Newsletter section or the Footer’s Newsletter block to collect email signups. Set the heading, button label and privacy text to fit your store.

The Newsletter popup has its own Enable popup setting, display trigger, delay or scroll depth, and days before showing again. A popup that was dismissed may remain hidden until that interval has passed.

The theme collects signups through Shopify. Email campaigns, welcome emails and discount delivery require your email-marketing setup. Check consent wording for your business; do not promise a discount without creating and delivering it.

Troubleshooting

Missing content, menu issues, image quality and theme updates.

A section is empty or showing placeholder products
  1. Confirm the section has its required image, product or collection selected.
  2. Check that the selected products are active, available to Online Store and included in the collection.
  3. Check that the section is visible and that you are previewing the correct template.
  4. Save, then refresh the actual storefront preview.

Link to this article

My menu image or dropdown is missing

Check Header → Main menu first. A parent needs child links for a dropdown. For featured images, the Mega menu feature block needs an image and an exact top-level menu label match. Automatic collection cards need no more than three child collections, each with imagery and no deeper submenu.

Link to this article

Changes show in the editor but not on the storefront

Make sure you saved the correct theme and are using its preview link. Editing an unpublished theme will not change the published store. Also check the template assigned to the product, collection or page, and whether a market-specific customization is selected.

Link to this article

Images are cropped, blurry or slow to load

Use a consistent aspect ratio for product photography and images large enough for their display size. In sections with mobile-image settings, supply a mobile composition instead of forcing a wide crop onto a narrow screen.

Reduce unnecessarily large source files, avoid stacking multiple autoplay videos, and retest after disabling unrelated app embeds in a duplicate theme. Product image ratio is controlled in Components and in relevant section settings.

Link to this article

Add to cart or variant selection is not behaving as expected
  1. Check availability, inventory policy and quantity rules for the selected variant.
  2. Try the same product directly on its product page. Note whether the issue only occurs in quick add, quick view or Shop the set.
  3. Preview a duplicate theme with optional app embeds disabled to isolate a possible conflict. Do not uninstall an app just to test it.
  4. Send support the affected URL, exact steps, browser, theme version and a screenshot or recording.

Shop the set cannot directly add items that require a selling plan. Choose products appropriate for that buying flow.

Update Lumenfold through Shopify
  1. Open Online Store → Themes and find Lumenfold. Duplicate your current theme before making changes.
  2. When Shopify shows an update notification on the theme card, open it and read View release notes.
  3. Select Add to draft themes. Shopify adds the updated copy without publishing it.
  4. Review the updated copy. Check whether Shopify carried over any custom code, then test layouts, app integrations, menus, product options and the cart.
  5. Select Publish only after testing. Keep the previous theme as a backup.

If Shopify does not offer an update for your Theme Store installation, use a fresh copy from the Theme Store and review which settings need to be transferred.
